'Digital pills' receive European and US approvals
Scientific developers in the US have produced what are being called ‘digital pills’, which would be connected to microchips and allow doctors to monitor whether their patients are taking their medications as prescribed.
Both the European Medicine Authority (EMA) and the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) have recently approved the use of the digestible microchips, which are embedded in drugs, following studies showing their safety and efficacy when implanted in placebo pills.
The tiny devices have been made by Proteus Digital Health, in Redwood City, California and have been hailed by medical and scientific experts as a means of enhancing the efficacy of medical treatments.
Eric Topol, the director of the Scripps Translational Science Institute in California and author of The Creative Destruction of Medicine, said that the sand-particle sized sensor, containing trace amounts of magnesium and copper, hold tremendous potential for the future.
“About half of all people don’t take medications like they’re supposed to,” he said. “This device could be a solution to that problem, so that doctors can know when to rev up a patient’s medication adherence.”
The magnesium and copper inside the chips would generate a slight voltage when in contact with digestive juices and would send a signal to a microchip embedded in a person’s skin, which would then relay information to their healthcare provider.
Proteus’s George Savage explained, “The point is not for doctors to castigate people, but to understand how people are responding to their treatments. This way doctors can prescribe a different dose or a different medicine if they learn that it’s not being taken appropriately.”

Architects Association erects 'big shed' clad with timber
The Architectural Association’s Hooke Park campus has announced the addition of another timber building in the shape of its new ‘big shed’. The large construction, which has been clad with cedar wood panels, is intended to act as a shelter for trainees as they erect trial projects.
The new shelter was actually designed by the students themselves and used the timber from the Hooke Park woodland area in Dorset that is now owned by the Architectural Association. There are several other timber buildings on the site, all using the sustainable timber.
The students also worked with wood panels in the design of summer pavilions for London’s Bedford Square.
The big shed was designed around the space that was available, explained one the students responsible for the project, Nozomi Nakabayashi. He told the Architect’s Journal, “We developed a spatial understanding of the site through living here. A large window to the north would help create a sense of arrival [unfortunately cost constraints led to all glazing being replaced by polycarbonate], while a window to the west would engage occupants with the woods.”
Sustainable wood panel products such as Sterling OSB are appropriate the construction of outdoor sheds and workshops. For more information on the product and for some ideas of how it can be used, take a look here.

McDonald's embraces sustainable wood panels
McDonald’s has embraced sustainability in the construction of its largest ever restaurant in the Olympic Village in London’s Stratford.
The site is to be open for just six weeks and has been constructed using sustainable materials such as timber panels and decking that can be dismantled and re-used after the event is over.
The idea was that the restaurant was quick and easy to construct, thanks to the fact that it used prefabricated timber panels, and that 75 per cent of it would be re-usable or recyclable. Sustainable panel products such as Sterling OSB are ideal for these kinds of structures as they are made entirely from wood sourced from sustainably managed forests. McDonald’s CEO in the UK, Jill McDonald, explained that sustainability was at the centre of their work on the Olympic park, London 2012 is set to be the most sustainable Games and this ambition inspired us not only to fulfil our role as official restaurant in the catering operation behind the event, but also to bind sustainability into the heart of our state-of-the-art Olympic Park restaurants."
The restaurant is expected to serve up to 1,200 people per hour over the busiest times, with a total of 50,000 Big Macs and 180,000 portions of fries being sold over the event.
For more information on Sterling OSB material and its uses, take a look here.

BBC urged to open up about tax
Senior BBC executives are set to be quizzed by MPs about the tax affairs and pay of top BBC staff.
The enquiry by the Public Accounts Committee has come about after it was revealed that over 2,000 public servants are paid through a system which allows them to pay corporation tax rather than higher rate income tax. The service company contract arrangement, which is completely legal but frowned upon for public servants, also means the employer does not need to pay National Insurance for the employee.
Zarin Patel, the BBC’s chief financial officer, and David Smith, the corporation’s head of employment tax, are set to be grilled by the committee this week.
Labour minister Margaret Hodge, who chairs the Public Accounts Committee, is quoted by the Guardian as saying, "We are calling [the BBC] because we understand they have a huge number of people who are being paid through personal companies and we need to understand whether this is tax avoidance or a legitimate business practice.”
She added, "If in that group there are presenters, I think probably we will legitimately want to know. I have got a very simple principle here: if you earn your wage on the back of the taxpayers, and they do in effect because they get their money from the licence fee, you have a moral imperative to lead by example."

I have got a very simple principle here: if you earn your wage on the back of the taxpayers, and they do in effect because they get their money from the licence fee, you have a moral imperative to lead by example."

From what we’ve heard from our clients, these expectations usually take two forms – the first is around the kinds of work and level of responsibility that graduates are given, and the second is around the pace and visibility of their career progression through the organization.

Private medical equipment firms provide Olympic ambulances
The NHS-run London Ambulance Service (LAS) has spent around £900,000 on taking on and equipping a fleet of private ambulances, to ensure that it can cope with the extra demand during the London 2012 Olympic Games.
It is thought that around 50 ambulances will be on the streets of the capital during the Olympic Games, provided through a slew of medical and scientific sales deals.
The ambulances are being supplied by the private medical equipment companies, X9 Healthcare, AST Ambulance Service, Thames Ambulance Group and Lifecare Medics. Funding for the contracts has come from the £7.6 million provided by the Department of Health to help London cope with the strain that the surge of Olympic visitors is expected to put on health services.
Jason Killens, LAS’s assistant director of operations, said they had already experienced an increase in 999 calls, and the choice to engage with the private companies was a wise one.
He explained, “We have consciously spread the risk between four organisations, so if there's an issue with one of these four organisations we have contracted with, we only lose part of it, not all of it.”
“The skill level of these private-sector vehicles is the same as the 300 [LAS] ambulances we put out every day… Londoners needing an emergency ambulance won’t notice any difference in the quality of care [they receive].”

Chipboard is a great solution for pop-up restaurateur
A new pop-up pizza restaurant has been opened in Helston in Cornwall, where every piece of furniture was made by the owners from chipboard to try to keep costs down.
The restaurant, which is proving extremely popular with local and tourists alike, is the brainchild of Rowan Trelowarren, the son of local restaurateurs, who is hoping the pop-up will help fund his final year at Central St Martins in London.
He explained to West Briton newspaper that the restaurant is the very opposite of ‘fine dining’ and that he and his friend Hannah Stephens made all the furniture from chipboard and even used the light-weight, low-costs material to construct a vast wine rack.
Chipboard products like Contiboard make the construction of furniture, shelving and cupboards very quick and easy. Contiboard is also made from timber sourced from sustainably managed forests, ensuring it is an ethical choice.
Rowan explained that the chipboard and the casual aesthetic added to the vibe they wanted to create. He told the paper: "We didn't want it to be all 'done' and neat. We want people to come and eat fantastic pizza and drink great wine without having to spend an arm and a leg – or having to dress up if they don't want to."
For more information on the finishes of Contiboard and for inspirational ideas, take a look here.

Sterling OSB is top of the class at Kirkwall Grammar School
More than 2,000 sheets of Norbord’s 11 mm Sterling OSB 3 have been incorporated into the timber wall panels of a new grammar school in Kirkwall, Orkney.
The material, which is made at Norbord’s Inverness factory from wood grown in sustainably-managed Scottish forests, was supplied to design-build contractor, Morrison Construction via the Orkney branch of Jewson.
Morrison Construction is the main contractor on Orkney Islands Council’s £58 million Schools Investment Programme. This scheme, which got underway in March 2011 and will take four years to complete, involves the construction of two new schools, a new halls of residence and a swimming pool complex.
The new Kirkwall Grammar School building comprises three teaching wings connected by an interlinking curved “street” which houses social and dining areas. A new oval-shaped Orkney Arts Theatre will be integral to the building.
Sterling OSB was specified for the highly-insulated timber panels which provide the main building envelope. They are combined with a variety of external finishes including copper cladding, natural stone, render and facing block. The building superstructure consists of a structural steel frame and its roof is aluminium standing seam system.
“This is by far the largest use of timber panels on any building I’ve seen on Orkney” says Brian Kynoch, manager of Jewson’s Kirkwall branch. “We supplied an initial order for 1,476 sheets of OSB and started shipping in January 2012. We then received an order for a further 738 sheets which were delivered in February.”
Timber components, as well as timber frame generally, have been widespread throughout Scotland for many years, its inherent thermal efficiency and speed of erection proving ideal for the Scottish climate. At Kirkwall Grammar School, the timber infill panels forming the external envelope were largely complete by late April, having been started only 12 weeks previously.
Sterling OSB3 is the UK’s best-selling oriented strand board for structural applications. Stronger than most softwood plywood and precision-engineered for consistent strength, the product is BBA approved and conforms to all relevant Eurocodes.

Responsibility for tax code checking set to shift to taxpayers
Her Majesty's Revenue & Customs (HMRC) could be set to make taxpayers responsible for checking they are on the right tax code.According to a This Is Money report, HMRC has plans to impose a stricter test on taxpayers in a bid to avoid tax underpayment. Under the new scheme, the report suggests, individuals will be responsible for checking that their own tax code is correct and for informing HMRC of any changes in their circumstances. Fines could be imposed if mistakes are made. For example, a £100 fine could be issued to anyone who is unaware that they should be submitting a self-assessment tax return. In addition, individuals may no longer be able to appeal unexpected tax bills on the grounds that they were unaware of their tax obligations. They will have to prove that they double-checked their tax code and that all efforts were made to update HMRC on any change in circumstances.Patricia Mock, director of tax at Deloitte, is quoted by This Is Money as saying, “There will be greater onus on the individual to be on top of their tax affairs.”She added, “Essentially, it’s up to you to make sure you’ve got the right code and are paying the right amount. Though it means the rules are clearer, it’ll likely to mean fewer people will benefit.”

Divorce lawyers in the UK may face a hefty bill, after research found that half of all divorce settlements since December 2000 may have undervalued pensions. Divorce LifeLine, who carried out the research, believes as many as 750,000 people may be entitled to claim thousands of pounds.

Treasury minister warns against cash-in-hand discounts
It is “morally wrong” for the public to pay tradesmen and contractors such as plumbers and builders cash in hand in order to get a discount, Treasury Secretary David Gauke has said.In response to a question on Newsnight, Gauke said there was nothing intrinsically wrong with making cash payments to contractors and tradesmen but that there was a problem with doing so to avoid paying tax.He said the practice comes at a large cost to the UK economy because it means the tradesmen may keep the work off the books and therefore avoid paying income tax and VAT on the money. It is estimated that the Government loses out on around £2 billion per year because as such practices, referred to as the “black economy”.The Daily Telegraph quoted Mr Gauke as saying, "Getting a discount with your plumber by paying cash in hand is something that is a big cost to the Revenue and means others have to pay more in tax."He added, "I think it is morally wrong. It is illegal for the plumber but it is pretty implicit in those circumstances that there is a reason why there is a discount for cash."

Norbord?s Caberdek for prestige new-builds
Norbord’s market-leading Caberdek floor system has been used in the construction of four high-quality detached houses in rural Warwickshire.
The properties, located in the village of Fulready near Stratford on Avon, are craftsman-built using reclaimed Warwickshire brick with clay tiled roofs over.
“The local firm is well known for building bespoke upmarket properties in the traditional style” explains Pasquill Merchant National Account Manager, Gary Young.
Unlike traditional houses, these four properties have modern CAD-designed timber roof and floor structures manufactured offsite by Pasquill, one of the largest UK timber engineering companies. Pasquill was able to design the roofs to include extra living space using special room-in-the-roof trusses.
The floors of these attic rooms, as well as those on the first floors, were created with Norbord’s Caberdek tongue-and-grooved boards. Made of moisture-resistant P5 particleboard and finished with a waterproof and abrasion-resistant peel-clean film, Caberdek is the ideal choice for suspended timber floors, the protective film remaining in place until following wet trades have finished.
Once the room is decorated, the film can be peeled off to expose the clean dry particleboard ready to receive the desired floor finish.
Caberdek is also ideal for use where the floor is to be laid before the roof is completed. With the tongue-and-groove joints protected with Norbord’s special tape, a Caberdek floor can be exposed to the elements for up to 42 days without risk of damage.

'Robot doctor' approved by FDA
New medical technology that has been labeled by some as a ‘robot doctor’ is to be added to the list of approved devices of the USA’s Food and Drug Administration (FDA), in a move that could spark a sea-change in international medical equipment.
Remote Presence Virtual + Independent Telemedicine Assistant (RP-VITA) is the product of collaborative development between iRobot and InTouch Health, and has been approved to be listed on the FDA’s Class II devices list.
Its inclusion on the list gives the machine clearance to be used in “active patient monitoring in high acuity environments where immediate clinical action may be required, such as in the ICU and emergency department, facilitating the rapid assessment and treatment of stroke and other time critical conditions.”
RP-VITA is capable of autonomously navigating its way around hospitals, accurately avoiding obstacles and people, and will be cloud connected to medical records systems, to ensure that doctors have a full bank of information at their disposal. The robots are intended to be an aid to medical staff, described as “the remote presence device component of a total acute care telemedicine solution”. They have been designed to be fully customisable, allowing doctors to switch and swap components depending on their particular needs.

Small firms urged not to miss out on Patent Box tax breaks
Many small businesses could risk missing out on lucrative tax breaks from the forthcoming Patent Box system, experts have warned.Under the scheme, which comes into effect in April 2013, businesses that have generated profits from Intellectual Property can benefit from a tax cut which means they pay just 10 per cent tax on that money.Accountancy firm KPMG has expressed concern that many smaller firms could fail to take advantage of the tax break. KPMG has said it has noticed that larger businesses are taking advice on the Patent Box system but fewer small firms are coming forward to seek information. The accountancy firm believes the reason for this may be that small businesses are concerned that the tax break claims process will be complicated and that professional advice in this area will be too expensive.Jonathan Bridges, an associate partner at KPMG, explains, "Small and medium-sized businesses are sometimes concerned that the costs and hassle of claiming a tax relief might outweigh the financial benefits."However, KPMG has noted that an SME that has made £100,000 profits from Intellectual Property could save as much as £12,000 through the scheme.

World biosensor sales now top $13 billion
British researchers have estimated that the value of the worldwide biosensor industry is worth more than $13 billion every year.
The study into the industry was carried out by Tony Turner, one of the formative developers of biosensors 30 years ago, who now works a Cranfield University in Buckinghamshire. Turner said that biosensors – which use biological material combined with an often portable detector to diagnose disease or pick up pollutants – sustain thousands of research and development jobs, as well as scientific sales jobs.
He added that the market for the devices is only set to grow, as medicine becomes more personalised and hospitals seek to keep patients out of expensive hospital beds and off costly drugs.
The biosensor market is still dominated by devices for diabetics, allowing them to self-check their blood sugar levels. Biosensors for diabetics account for 85 per cent of the market, but scientists are working on expanding their application for use with other illnesses, including HIV.
Maximilian Fleischer, the head of chemical and biosensors at Siemens Corporate Technology, said, “The challenge is definitely to work on non-invasive technologies. We are anticipating that the application of biosensors in point-of-care diagnosis will be a large upcoming market.”

Community timber recycling project proving a success
Figures show that the network of community wood recycling projects all over the UK have defied the recession to earn more than £1 million in collection fees since 2009.
Some 7,000 tonnes in weight of timber has been collected under the National Community Wood Recycling Project scheme. This timber would have otherwise gone to landfill.
In the process, the schemes are thought to have created some 50 permanent jobs, as well as providing volunteer opportunities for disadvantaged people.
The projects are each self-supporting from a financial point of view and help to increase the amount of waste timber being recycled into products like chipboard and MDF, which can be used in the construction of environmentally responsible buildings. Indeed, brands like Caberboard and Contiboard can use up 80 per cent recycled material in their manufacture.
The recycling of used timber reduces the needed to fell virgin timber and also reduces the impact of processing and transportation when the recycled timber is used locally.
The managing director of the NCWRP, Richard Mehmed, said, “I am delighted that the building industry has shown its support for green community enterprise by taking us to this important milestone.”

New Engineered timber Products Forum launched
A new industry forum to raise the profile of using engineered timber products for construction projects, has been launched by the Timber Trade Federation (TTF).
The TTF’s head of external affairs, David Hopkins, explained that more and more developers are seeing the benefits of using timber beams, wood panels and other prefabricated wood products in their construction projects.
Now, the TTF’s Engineered Timber Products Forum intends to help develop the understanding and acceptance of using timber products in construction projects, by providing a platform for members to discuss the issues.
As well as often being cheaper than using alternatives like steel and bricks, it is also a low-carbon option as sustainable forestry helps to reduce the amount of carbon in the atmosphere. Mr Hopkins explained that many developers are now looking for materials that reflect the ‘low cost, low carbon’ mantra and timber panel products, such as Caberboard P5 and Sterling OSB3 meets this demand.
Another benefit, claimed Hopkins, is the fact that the timber panels and beams are delivered already engineered in a factory, helping to reduce the amount of work that needs to be done on site.

Tesco uses wood panels for walls of store extension
Tesco has announced it will extend its Hunstanton store by 50 per cent, using sustainable materials and technologies in the construction of the new retail areas, including wood panels.
The retail giant has received positive feedback from the public in Hunstanton about the plans to extend, largely generated thanks to the eco-friendly attributes the store will be able to boast following the extension. The cladding on the walls of the new part of the building will be made from wood panels that can be used in humid and damp conditions, so that they won’t be damaged from exposure to sea air. Sterling OSB3 is ideal for such applications being both suitable for humid conditions and structural work, plus it comes fully FSC accredited.
Louise Gosling, a spokesperson for Tesco, explained that the newly extended store will also use a range of other sustainable technologies, such as rainwater harvesting, efficient refrigeration and combined heat and power generation.
The new extension will create 75 new full-time jobs and the local people are supporting the venture and its green credentials.
“We want to expand the store to create a better shopping experience for our customers all year round,” explained Ms Gosling.

Buckingham Palace replica built out of MDF
A family from West Lothian is marking their daughter’s reign as Fair Queen at her town’s annual festival by building a 35ft replica of the Buckingham Palace façade out of timber and MDF.
James and Janet Bell of Bo’ness brought in a team of builders to construct a replica of the famous landmark to mark the Spirit of London theme of the event. Their 11-year-old daughter, Nicole, was voted Fair Queen by the other pupils a her school and her parents quickly set about raising money to pay for the replica to be built and dresses to be made for the festival.
The replica took 80 sheets of MDF and 500 metres of timber to build. The construction was carried out in a nearby barn and the replica was then moved by crane to the site of the Bell family’s home in time for the festival.
MDF products like Caberwood are perfect for this type of job as it is lightweight and sustainable.
James Bell thanks the rest of the community for supporting the idea: “It’s taken a lot of work and planning, but we’re happy with the result. We’ve had so much help, we can’t thank folk enough.”

What House? Awards celebrate sustainable housing developments
The efforts of several sustainable housing development firms have been rewarded by the What House? Awards, under the Best Sustainable Development 2011 category.
The winner of the Silver award was Orbit Homes, for its £3 million construction of 18 flats and 5 houses, which are all energy efficient. They were built using a method that involves construction using pre-fabricated wood panels that make the building of the homes very quick and sustainable.
The use of wood panels made from sustainable timber can help to reduce the carbon footprint of a development significantly. Products like Sterling OSB are commonly used in the development of timber frame housing as a green solution.
Orbit’s Head of Sustainable Investment, John Barnham, said, “This award demonstrates the industry's recognition of the innovative work Orbit Heart of England is leading within the West Midlands, which forms part of our organisational goals to meet the climate change challenge."
The Gold award winner was Linden Homes, which was responsible for a zero-carbon development, which is scheduled for completion in 2019. Residents’ energy will be provided from a purpose built renewable energy centre featuring 1,812 square metres of solar panels and off-site wind turbines.

Architect wins award for green social housing
The Regional Building Excellence Awards has given a green development award to an architect firm in Leicester for their timber framed council houses.
The Best Social Housing development award went to Architects Maber. The firm also took the Chairman’s Award, which is said to be the highest accolade in the Regional Building Excellence Awards.
The social housing project involved the development of 146 homes on behalf of Leicester City Council and the Local Authority’s New Build scheme. The development took place over five sites, which added to the challenges faced by Maber.
They decided to design nine different types of home, all with timber frame structures and other green additions, such as solar water heating panels and heat recovery systems. The homes all received a Code for Sustainable Homes Level 4 certification. This is the current aim for social housing, until 2016, after which a zero carbon rating will be targeted.
The timber frame developments are just the latest in a line of timber constructions being built all over the country as developers begin to understand the environmental benefit of using sustainable timber and wood panels, such as Sterling OSB, in the construction of houses.
