New laser microscope could revolutionise cancer diagnosis

A new kind of microscope with the potential to cut cancer diagnosis times could go into commercial production.

The US National Science Foundation (NSF) has awarded Daylight Solutions, which pioneered the quantum cascade laser (QCL), $420,000 to investigate how the new laser could be commercialised. Experts say that the device could mean cancer diagnosis results may be available in minutes rather than days.

The latest funding is the second phase in the research programme. The first phase has been completed and, according to Optics.org, its aim was to “demonstrate that broadly tunable infrared microscope based on QCL sources and microbolometer detectors was feasible”.

Daylight Solutions will develop a commercial prototype over the next two years, in preparation for a production scale-up. The NSF has described the device as a potential ‘game changer’.

An NSF abstract states, “The QCL microscope to be built in Phase II will revolutionise infrared microscopy instrumentation.”

It adds, “Based on demonstrated performance of components in Phase I, it is estimated that the time to screen a tissue array for signs of cancer will be reduced from six days with a FTIR microscope to just three minutes with a QCL microscope.”

Blackpool Roofing goes flat-out for Sterling Roofdek

Blackpool Roofing is one of the oldest-established roofing contractors in the North-West, having been passed down through three generations of the Lynden family.
According to the managing director, Sean Lynden, the company will tackle any type of roofing within a 120-mile radius of its headquarters – taking it as far as the East coast, south to the Midlands and into Scotland to the north.
The company’s main specialisation is in flat roofing, for which it relies heavily on Norbord’s Sterling OSB Roofdek.
“Fibreglass flat roofing is massive for us” explains Sean. “We will do any project, from a garage to a sports centre or school hall.
“We’ve been using Sterling OSB Roofdek for the past 14 or 15 years” explains Sean. “OSB is the perfect choice for decking out a flat roof. Nobody uses plywood any more, and not just because it’s expensive. Roofdek 8’ x 2’ tongue-and-grooved panels are better because they have the T&G joints and are self-supporting. That means you don’t have to support each edge on a joist.”
Blackpool Roofing carries out both new-build and re-roofing contracts. “If it’s a re-roof, we will first strip the old roof off, then install membranes and insulation before boarding out with Roofdek panels. No adhesive is required in the T&G joints because we then laminate the fibreglass which is bonded directly to the board.
New-build projects follow more or less the same sequence. As a specialist in roofing the company does not supply or install the supporting joists which are the responsibility of the main contractor.
“What we do provide is a 20-year performance guarantee” says Sean.
Blackpool Roofing’s Sterling Roofdek is supplied via the local branch of Jewson. “We get through a lot of timber and can require anything from four to eight pallets of Roofdek per month” says Sean.  “We always use Sterling OSB, although other brands are available. Norbord’s the biggest manufacturer of OSB in the UK so we know that supplies are going to be reliable and delivery will be prompt”.

What?s in a name? Quite a lot, says Norbord!

Norbord, the UK’s leading panel products manufacturer, has re-launched its top-selling MDF range with new product names designed to help customers choose the right board for their requirements – quickly and easily.
The new range offers the same variety of high quality boards yet these are now grouped logically into just three basic lines so that the purchaser can identify the best board for specific requirements: Caberwood MDF Trade, Caberwood MDF Pro and Caberwood MDF Industrial MR.
MDF (or Medium Density Fibreboard) is one of the most widely-used materials in interior fit-out, DIY, general building and furniture manufacturer. Made from wood fibres bonded together in a resin matrix, its fine, even texture and excellent workability make it ideal for many applications traditionally calling for natural wood.
Norbord currently produces three basic types of MDF, ranging from a lightweight general purpose board through to a relatively high-density grade designed for use in manufactured components.
Previously marketed at “Light”, “Standard” and “Deep Rout”, these three basic lines were further supplemented with “Moisture Resistant” (MR), “Moisture Resistant Light” and “Industrial MR”.
“The new structure means that the focus of the three new names is on typical end uses - not the MDF grade.  Ease of selection for the end-user was our objective” explains Norbord regional sales manager, David Webb.
While the existing grades still exist, the new names create a logical brand identity. Hence customers can choose from “Trade”, “Pro” and “Industrial MR” with Trade and Pro options also available in moisture resistant versions.
Only one previous grade – MDF Ultralight – is no longer available. “Caberwood MDF Trade fulfils the role of Ultralight and is now the lightest grade in the range,” explains David.
The new product names are now more descriptive and follow a well-established tradition in the building materials industry. “Trade” is a term widely used to describe products designed for general use by tradesmen carrying out a range of small building works. Caberwood MDF Trade will appeal to jobbing builders and DIY customers who buy their MDF through builders’ merchants.
The term “Pro” or “Professional” is widely used to denote professional builders and, in this case, carpenters who specialise in high-end applications such as interior fit-out work. They will be using Caberwood MDF on a daily basis, procuring their supplies through both builders’ and timber merchants.
“Industrial” indicates the suitability of the product for use as a stock material in a manufacturing process. Caberwood MDF Industrial is, therefore, aimed at manufacturers of doors, furniture, architectural mouldings and other added-value products which involve extensive machining and the application of specialist surface finishes.
Norbord is now embarking on a major marketing campaign designed to consolidate Caberwood’s position as the UK’s leading brand of MDF and to familiarise customers and dealers with the new, streamlined, product names.

Sustainable timber in fashion in Australia

Sustainable timber isn’t just fashionable in the UK. The Sydney Morning Herald is reporting on timber's 'comeback' in fashion in Oz, with reference to timber cladding products similar to Norbord’s popular Caberwood and Sterling OSB ranges.
In the article, many high-profile buildings using timber are mentioned, including Deakin University buildings, the Lakeside Stadium grandstand and the RMIT advanced manufacturing precinct.
But it was actually a 100-year-old building in Berlin that started the trend. Timber was used for Australia's new embassy in Germany, which inspired the architect in charge to experiment.
"We have used timber in a suite of buildings, both externally and internally," said Melbourne architect Tim Hurburgh. At the Genazzano College performing arts centre, timber was used on the main acoustic walls, platforms for seats, the ceiling and the balustrades.
Timber looks beautiful as an exterior facade to buildings, both domestic and commercial. Sustainable timber is also an environmentally friendly and responsible choice for the building industry.
Timber cladding is also popular in contemporary buildings in Germany and Switzerland and is used in high quality housing to keep heat in, here in the UK. Sterling OSB was specified for the highly-insulated timber panels in Orkney Islands Council’s £58 million Schools Investment Programme earlier this year and timber cladding is more effective than other materials such as concrete for keeping in heat.

Engineered wooden panels rising in popularity across globe

According to new research, the popularity of engineered wooden panels for use in both residential and commercial construction is continuing to see a sharp rise.
APA -The Engineered Wood Association, found that the growing interest in the structural panels had intensified in the second quarter of this year across North America. The association reported an overall year-on-year production growth of seven per cent to 6.287 million m³.
Alongside the dramatic rise in production, the output was also five per cent higher than during the first three months of this year, when 5.984 million m³ of the panels were produced across North America. Manufacturers produced 3.811 million m³ of OSB in the second three months of this year, chalking up an 11 per cent rise in production when compared to the same time period last year.
The growing interest in engineered wooden panels is coming as a result of increasing numbers of architects and housebuilders specifying the panels for both residential and commercial use. The environmentally-friendly facets of the panels are also proving popular as developers strive to create greener structures for the future.
The panels are also proving to be increasingly sought after in Europe. Recently, one of the largest wooden multi-storey buildings has been completed in Finland, proving that timber is a solid alternative construction material for such structures.
The building, which comprises 104 apartments, has been built in Viikki, Helsinki, and is composed of five timber buildings boasting a total gross floor space of 6,300 square metres. Each timber building has between three and four floors and is based on the design of the Metsä Wood Multi-Storey System.
Ari Tiukkanen, Senior Vice President Building Products, Metsä Wood, told the Lesprom Network, “The project proved that wood is an excellent alternative for industrial construction of multi-storey buildings."
“Many of the traditional challenges associated with the construction of wooden multi-storey buildings were solved. The residences in Viikki are state of the art in terms of fire safety, soundproofing, and energy-efficiency,” Tiukkanen went on to say.
Sterling OSB is a sound choice for such projects providing clear environmental and structural benefits, for further information on this product click here.

Wood First Plus! to promote sustainable timber

A nationwide sustainable timber campaign is entering a new phase. Wood First Plus! is the next stage of Wood For Good and aims to promote timber cladding products as a 'primary and preferred construction material' across the UK.
This means extra publicity for Norbord’s wood panel products, such as Sterling OSB, which are already popular among the building trade for delivering quality results and high performance.
All Norbord products are also certified by the Forestry Stewardship Council (FSC) as being from legal and sustainable sources. They are easy to use and environmentally friendly, too.
Stuart Harker, managing the project from the Timber Trade Federation, said: "Environmental impacts, along with cost and performance, are going to be key customer drivers for the foreseeable future across the construction products sector.”
The initiative will target carbon, life assessment and efficiency to ensure timber products are being properly promoted across the sector. As part of the project, they will consult with contractors groups, architects and professional institutions to ensure the support of the UK building industry.
“Environmental sustainability assessment is increasingly delivered through assessment of supply chains, design, construction, whole-life assessment and end-of-life aspects,” said Mr Harker. “As these measurements increase in importance, so too does the demand for robust, accessible data. This project aims to deliver that."
The Wood for Good campaign chiefs hope that the additional funding means their message will reach a wider audience and be communicated clearly. David Hopkins, head of communications for Wood for Good, said: “Wood for Good, as the pan-industry communications campaign, is a natural home for this. We will be promoting the results as they become available."

Architect-designed timber home scoops numerous awards

A home in Pitmachie, Aberdeenshire, has picked up a host of awards at the recent Aberdeenshire Design Awards thanks to its focus on environmentally-friendly materials.
The ‘Model-D House,’ was designed by architect Professor Gokay Deveci, who runs a practice based at The Scott Sutherland School of Architecture and Built Environment at Aberdeen’s Robert Gordon University’s Garthdee campus. It was then turned into a reality by Old Rayne-based timber engineers, Sylvan Stuart Ltd.
Amongst the awards the house picked up was a highly commended stamp in the sustainability section of the awards for its extensive use of native timber and its insistence on sustainable sources. It also scored points for its low carbon footprint and features which allowed it to provide high standards of insulation whilst being low maintenance.
Choosing wood which comes from responsibly managed forests, or from recycled material, is key when working towards a sustainable construction project. Wood taken from forests that are certified to Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) standards means that the world’s ancient forests are being preserved and true environmentally-friendly buildings can be constructed. Opting for wooden panels or cladding that has been manufactured using energy derived from renewables - residues left over from the manufacturing process - is also key to achieving a true sustainable construct. Many eco-aware architecture firms across the globe are increasingly specifying engineered wood-based panel products such as Caberwood MDF and Caberfloor, all of which are FSC certified.
The Model-D House also picked up a Saltire Society’s housing prize, the Wood for Good Award, and is on the shortlist for the highly coveted Doolan Prize, the highest cash award given in relation to the architecture industry each year.
Bryan Stuart, Sylvan Stuart’s managing director, told the Inverurie Herald, “We want to supply and build rural housing that has as low environmental impact as is possible, with cutting-edge design and construction technology, and at a price that makes it accessible to many.”

Deadline for HMRC?s late tax return campaign draws near

Time is running out for businesses that wish to take advantage of a time-limited amnesty on late tax returns which is being offered by HMRC.The initiative is aimed at higher rate taxpayers who have failed to submit Self Assessment tax returns for the tax year 2009/10 or earlier. Although those who pay the 40 per cent tax rate and above are the main focus of the campaign, the amnesty is open to anyone who owes a tax return for these dates. The deadline for those who wish to take advantage of the amnesty is 2 October. By this date, taxpayers must have submitted the returns that they owe and paid any tax and National Insurance necessary.HMRC says those who come forward before the deadline will receive better terms and a lower penalty than firms that choose to wait or do nothing. After 2 October, HMRC may use its legal powers to take enforcement action against those that owe tax returns and tax.Marian Wilson, head of HMRC Campaigns, said, “Time is running out if HMRC sent you a Self Assessment tax return or notice to complete a tax return for 2009/10 or earlier and you have not acted on it. You need to go onto the HMRC website now and bring your tax affairs up to date. If your circumstances warrant it, you will be able to spread the payments.”

BBC News September 6 2012:

“Local Government Secretary Eric Pickles has outlined plans to ease the rules on building extensions as part of a range of new measures to boost the construction industry and provide more affordable homes.
Making a housing and planning statement to MPs on 6 September 2012, Mr Pickles said homeowners in England will be allowed to extend their properties without full planning permission for the limited period of a year.
Mr Pickles told MPs it would make it easier to build that long-wanted conservatory: "As a nation we have great pride in our homes...so we will be seeking to simplify and increase permitted development rights for households.
"Cutting back municipal red tape in this way should provide a particular boost to small traders and builders." “
Norbord UK, as the leading supplier of a wide variety of engineered wood panel products to the UK construction industry, with significant volume being used by the small to medium-sized builder for RMI and self build markets, welcomes the initiative.
Karl Morris, MD of Norbord Europe says: “it is good to know that Government is starting to stimulate activity in our construction industry. Although a first step it shows the right thinking and we hope that more initiatives are in the pipeline.’

Government considers tax-free jobs. http://www.50percenttax.co.uk/index/2012/9/26/government-considers-tax-free-jobs.html

Government considers tax-free jobs

The Government is said to be mulling over the idea of creating mini-jobs which would mean that taxpayers could do a certain amount of work without paying tax or National Insurance.Reports say that the scheme is being considered as a way to boost employment and is based on a similar initiative in Germany, where employees can earn up to the equivalent of £314 per month without paying tax. Employers only pay basic National Insurance for pensions, social insurance and wage taxes.Workers can hold several mini-jobs which pay below the taxation threshold, with the only impact on their take-home pay being the reduction of unemployment benefit over a certain threshold. Above the £314 payment mark, workers are taxed on a sliding scale. Some in Germany have called the scheme, which was brought in almost 10 years ago, a “jobs miracle” and the country has one of the lowest unemployment rates in Europe. However, Germany also has no minimum wage, unlike the UK, and some say such initiatives trap workers in low-paid, dead-end jobs. One of Chancellor George Osborne’s allies is quoted by the Guardian as saying, "What I can tell you is that this is being looked at in government. There are lots of ideas that are being looked at as part of the deregulation drive, and this is one of them."

UK tax evasion falls

The number of cases of serious tax evasion identified by HMRC has fallen, new analysis has suggested.Statistics analysed by Pinsent Masons show that in 2011/12 there were 3,456 suspected serious tax evasion cases identified by local HMRC offices, a decrease of 23 per cent on the 4,506 cases identified in 2010-11. According to Pinsent Masons, this is the lowest number of tax evasion cases identified by HMRC in the last five years and this appears to go against the growing perception that tax evasion is getting worse.Separate Pinsent Masons research shows that HMRC has doubled its efforts to fight tax evasion since 2010/11, undertaking 499 raids in 2011/12, compared to 196 in 2010/11.Phil Berwick, director at Pinsent Masons, said, “Public concern over tax evasion and tax avoidance has reached fever pitch, but these figures show the level of outcry and language used by some is not entirely justified."He added, "A significant fall in the number of cases identified by HMRC’s local offices doesn’t really gel with the idea that there is a substantial and growing threat to public spending because of tax evasion.”
