Top level businesses deliver significant proportion of UK tax income

The financial services sector in the UK contributed over 12 per cent of the Government’s total tax income over the financial year, according to newly released figures. The report from the City of London Corporation found that the total tax contribution from banks and financial institutions grew to £63 billion at the tax year-end, compared to £53 billion the previous year. The analysis showed that financial services firms paid out an average of almost 20 per cent of their annual income on tax, the highest percentage since the survey began, and up from 15 per cent in 2007.This is still below what it was before the recession, but experts say it suggests that measures such as the one-off supertax on bankers’ bonuses, the 50 per cent tax rate and an increase in VAT, had all boosted the tax contribution. The Government has announced plans to ensure the UK moves away from its reliance on financial services to investment in manufacturing. However, experts have warned that this is not a quick-fix solution. Stuart Fraser, policy chairman at the City of London Corporation, told the Financial Times, “We’ve always been supportive of rebalancing. But we believe the way to get there is not by shrinking the financial services industry, but by building up other industries.”

Football clubs next target for taxman

Football clubs and other high-earning companies are set to be the next target of the taxman, as Her Majesty's Revenue & Customs (HMRC) seeks to claw back money it has lost to high-profile tax dodgers.Following the embarrassing revelations over the £10 million-plus tax deal that benefited investment bank, Goldman Sachs, HMRC is now looking to try to recover some £2 billion from companies with Employee Benefit Trusts. The national tax body said they had offered these companies the opportunity to settle their tax liabilities earlier this year, but there had been very little response so they are planning to embark on a tougher course of action. The trusts are used by companies that pay high wages to some employees to allow them to receive tax rates of as little as one per cent. The employees are paid through those offshore trust and can use the assets to buy luxury goods like expensive homes and yachts. Glasgow Rangers Football Club is currently going through the courts on the matter, after HMRC presented the club with a tax bill in excess of £49 million. An HMRC spokesman said that the offer to settle the bills amicably would stand until December 31, after which date more stringent proceedings will be started.

Employment figures could help umbrella company contractors

New figures that have shown the UK’s employment outlook to be at its bleakest for three years could potentially mean an increase in employment opportunities becoming available for umbrella company contractors. The figures from the new report by national recruitment and staffing specialists, Manpower, have shown that hundreds of thousands of new jobs are still waiting to be filled throughout the UK – but brand new positions are unlikely to be created in any significant amount in the imminent future. Eight in 10 employers - in the survey of more than 2,100 firms - said they had no intention of hiring new staff in the next quarter. The opportunities for umbrella company contractors lie in the reluctance of many companies to take on permanent employees while the economy and staffing outlook remains in flux. Managing director of Manpower in the UK, Mark Cahill, said that the 2012 job market in Britain remains in a very precarious position and that the weakened economy is contributing to its ongoing uncertainty. “Employers have now adopted a wait-and-see approach to hiring,” Cahill explained. “They are cautious about the economy and the fear of a Euro-wide contagion is weighing heavily on their minds.”
