Olympic Village wins duel timber sustainability certification
The Forestry Stewardship Council (FSC) and the PEFC have both certified the entire London 2012 Olympic Park development.
The scheme has won certification as a result of its sustainable timber usage. It is the first project in the world to win the dual certification from both of these organisations.
The Olympic Delivery Authority (ODA) says it welcomes the news of its success in making the Games and the Olympic Village development as green as possible. The certifications indicate that every single piece of timber used in the development was procured from a sustainable and legal source.
The PEFC's Alun Watkins, told Build.co.uk: “PEFC is delighted to have worked together with FSC to help make dual certification of this highly prestigious project possible.”
“We congratulate the Olympic Delivery Authority on their decision to source only certified timber. This demonstrates a strong commitment to responsible timber procurement which will help to make London 2012 one of the most successful and greenest games ever,” he added.
It is thought that the model used to procure the timber for the project could be held up as a standard for similar projects all over the world in the future.
All Norbord's wood based panels are FSC-certified, indicating that they are made from sustainably and legally-sourced timber.

Figures show disappointing building materials sales
The latest figures from the Builders Merchants Federation (BMF) suggest that sales of building materials remain flat – growing by just 0.6 per cent from December 2011 to February 2012.
The increase was a year-on-year rise, but compared with the previous three-month period, sales actually dropped by a disappointing 3.7 per cent. The figures reflect a report released by the Office for National Statistics last week, which showed a 10.3 per cent and 12.9 per cent fall in construction output in December and January respectively, followed by a modest 6.1 per cent increase in February.
Although sales nationally were not showing too many signs of growth, certain regions did enjoy growth in building materials sales, such as London, which saw an 11 per cent rise and Yorkshire, which reported a 12.1 per cent rise.
In fact, many English regions saw sales increase, with Scotland bearing much of the brunt of falling demand for building materials – with sales falling 13.5 per cent during the three-month period.
The secretary of the BMF, Peter Matthews, said that he will be interested to see how government initiatives to stimulate house building affect the building materials trade. He explained, “It remains to be seen if the recent changes in planning law will open up more housing development, and whether government initiatives such as the Green Deal will bring about an increase in energy efficient RMI work to give a much needed boost to our sector over the coming year."

Eco-expert recycles wood into chipboard
Julia Hailes, an eco-consultant and writer, claims that giving an existing property an eco-makeover is a challenge – but it’s one worth taking on.
Writing in the Financial Times about her efforts to cut carbon emissions in her London flat by 60 per cent, Hailes claims that small things can make a big difference. She spent a huge amount of time, effort and of course money on making major changes to her home, including opting for green flooring options.
However, once the job was complete, she was keen to dispose of her building materials in an environmentally sound way. She decided to have the wood she had removed from the flat recycled into chipboard, which ensured that her project was green from start to finish.
Hailes opted for Cork and bamboo flooring, which can both be great option when fitting out an existing property. However, anyone building a new home can opt for Forestry Stewardship Council (FSC) certified chipboard flooring, such as Caberdek. This green option is hardy against the construction process and can offer excellent insulation and protection from the elements.
Installing double glazing, replacing old and inefficient boilers and improving insulation are other key changes that householders can make to improve their green credentials.

Biomass power subsidies attract criticism north of the border
Scottish Parliament ministers have joined forces with environmental campaigners to protest the payment of public-funded subsidies to biomass power stations.
MSPs lent their support to demonstrations organised by Friends of the Earth, Biofuelwatch and several other organisations. The campaigners claim that firms like Forth Energy are set to receive as much as £170 million each year from the public purse to help fund their plans to develop biomass power stations around Scotland.
Those opposing the power plants are against the burning of huge areas of forest to generate power. Emilia Hanna of Biofuelwatch, told the Press Association, "This trend is being mirrored across the globe, leading to the destruction of the world's forests, which are vital carbon sinks in the fight against climate change. The biomass industry is being artificially inflated by heavy subsidies."
One of the ministers adding her voice to the protests was Green MSP Alison Johnstone, who added that other renewable sources of energy, such as wind and wave power can be used instead of timber. She said, "Burning trees for electricity on a large-scale is totally inefficient and a waste of money in a country with a world-leading renewables industry that needs investment."

Chipboard takes centre stage in Google's new campus
Much has been written about the brand new Google-backed start-up ‘campus’ in London’s Tech City over the past two weeks – not least the fact that raw chipboard walls are among its design themes.
The undeniably stylish and cutting-edge office complex combines chipboard walls with industrial lighting and bright colours to create a unique working space. Its café and communal seating areas encourage people to share ideas and get their creative juices flowing.
The start-up campus contributes to the government’s plan to introduce a new hi-tech centre in East London. So far, Tech City has attracted many of the biggest names in international business and it is hoped that the campus will become a focus innovation and may even be the location in which the next Facebook or Google is created.
The decision to leave the chipboard on sections of the walls bare reflects the industrial design of the complex, and creates a feeling of the building being in transition.
The campus’s creation is not for the benefit of Google, but is, instead for the benefit of the community and those looking to start up a new business, explained the campus’s head, Eze Vidra.

Adding a mezzanine floor - a great alternative to extending
Those of us living in city centres who are struggling to find extra living and workspace, or even storage space, could benefit from the construction of a mezzanine floor.
Creating extra space, whether it be in a domestic setting, such as a studio apartment, or in a retail unit or warehouse, can be expensive. Adding an extension onto the outside of a building is pricey and often requires a lengthy planning application process. However, fitting a mezzanine level – thus expanding upwards – can add significant amounts of space for a fraction of the cost and time.
Planning permission isn’t needed for a mezzanine floor in a private home and many retailers will also find they will be able to add space this way providing they will not contravene government rules on retail floor space. Other advantages include the fact that mezzanine floors can often be constructed in a matter of a few days, depending on the size and design.
Internal mezzanine floors are constructed using high-grade materials such as high-density chipboard, especially made for flooring construction. It’s important to also make sure your chosen mezzanine flooring installer is fully trained and that their fitters have completed the Construction Skills Certificate Scheme.

Council encourages local to recycle DIY waste
People considering buying new MDF or particleboard products this spring are being urged to recycle any old wood they remove from their homes.
A new article in the Leighton Buzzard Observer on the subject includes advice from a Buckinghamshire Council Cabinet Minister for the Environment, Steven Adams. He claims that people embarking on DIY projects often don’t realise that most waste materials can be recycled.
He said, “People often don’t realise that much of the DIY rubbish they create can be recycled,” adding that local recycling centres now accept all kinds of DIY waste.
His advice for people removing wood from their homes during a renovation - in the form of skirting boards, window frames, doors and even furniture - was to ensure they take it in for recycling. He said, “Wood can easily be recycled into chipboard or medium-density fibreboard (MDF).”
Other recyclable or re-usable waste includes bricks and building rubble, which is often taken to landfill unnecessarily. Mr Adams explains: “Bricks, stones and other building materials that are in good condition can be sold, donated or re-used. Building materials are always in demand so advertise in local papers or community notice boards.”

Telegraph DIY expert recommends OSB for finishing insulation job
The Telegraph’s trusted resident DIY expert, Jeff Howell, has this week been recommending the use of OSB board to those considering major home renovation plans.
A concerned reader wrote to the newspaper with some questions regarding his roof insulation. Jeff recommended fitting insulation between the rafters in the roof, rather than above the ceiling.
He explained that this is a “much better way of keeping a house warm” and added that rigid PIR board, such as Kingspan or Celotex can be fitted between rafters after being cut to size. Once this stage is complete Jess said that a gap of 50mm should be left on the ‘cold’ side of the insulation, while a polythene vapour barrier can be stapled to the underside of the rafters.
OSB board can then be screwed in sheets to the underside of the rafter to finish the job. Jeff recommended Sterling Board for this.
Sterling OSB board is a versatile alternative to plywood that is ideal for use in load-bearing, dry conditions, such as under roof rafters, to finish a job cleanly and conveniently. It is easy to cut to size without splitting and can be screwed in place easily.

Become an instant expert in panel products
Norbord, the UK’s leading manufacturer of MDF, OSB and particleboard products, has developed an interactive training course designed to give builders’ merchant counter and yard staff a good all-round knowledge of its principal products.
After completing the course, sales and technical staff will be able to speak with confidence about the qualities, applications and suitability of the various Norbord products and help their customers make the right choice.
Developed with help from Martin Brown, a professional coach and trainer who has worked with many leading companies in a variety of industries, the course uses information videos, case studies and both individual and team activities to create an informative and enjoyable learning experience.
The full course covers Sterling OSB, Caberwood MDF and Caberboard flooring including Caberdek, Norbord’s market-leading peel-clean brand. Norbord’s special No-Squeak and Caberfix floor fixing adhesives are also covered. Each product module can be used independently as a stand-alone session if required.
Participants are encouraged to handle samples and develop an understanding of how each product is used and in what type of applications. As well as straightforward product descriptions, participants carry out a number of practical exercises, take part in quizzes and are encouraged to contribute their own comments and ideas.
This mixture of activities is carefully designed to appeal to the widest range of learning styles, thereby optimising the effectiveness of the course. Builders’ merchants also played an important role in developing the course, explains Martin:
“It is always a challenge to put together a short training session but by consulting with our target audience at the design stage we were able to tailor the session to their needs and learning styles and so create a fun but challenging learning session.
“Learning objectives are clear and measurable for both Norbord and the audience which will improve its effectiveness” he adds.
The course is currently being piloted with builder merchants and Norbord expects to roll the modules out during the course of 2012. However, the course is not limited to builders’ merchants. Anyone who sells, recommends or specifies wood based sheet materials and flooring products, or who works with builders, architects and specifiers such as local authorities and house-builders, will also benefit says Norbord.

Travis Perkins, Portslade, wins Norbord?s No-Squeak Campaign
Norbord’s No-Squeak campaign saw the Travis Perkins team at Portslade in East Sussex win a prize of two luxurious hampers. The campaign promoted awareness of Norbord’s No-Squeak flooring adhesive and encouraged branches to keep talking to their customers about Norbord products. Branches that sold the highest quantity of No-Squeak were entered into the prize draw.
Richard White, Area Sales Manager for Norbord, presented Branch Manager Trevor Head with the prize.
Norbord’s No-Squeak is a tough polyurethane adhesive designed specifically for bonding particleboard floor panels to their supporting joists. Brits failing to save on tax
The 50 per cent tax rate is on its way out but many Brits are still complaining of high taxes restraining their finances, despite the fact that they are doing little to take advantage of the tax relief on offer. In fact, the latest Tax Action Report from Unbiased revealed that 83 per cent of people claim they have done nothing in the past 12 months to reduce the amount of tax they pay. The figure rise to 88 per cent when just looking at women.Half of these people stated that they believe they are being as tax efficient as possible so they have not made any further efforts to change things. However, 27 per cent said that they don't know how to go about being more tax efficient, while 14 per cent said that they just don't know why they haven't attempted to reduce their tax liability.Karen Barrett, chief executive of unbiased.co.uk, commented: “Looking back at the last decade and the tax wastage figures in our reports, the numbers are just as shocking now as they were then. “This year marks our second highest tax wastage figure on record, only marginally falling from a record high last year.”

Yorks. innovation centre offers potential for scientific sales jobs
A new North Yorkshire innovation centre is expected to create hundreds of scientific jobs, including scientific sales jobs.
The Sand Hutton Applied Innovation Campus is to welcome its first tenants later this year, providing start-up and developing scientific businesses with the investment and research facilities to help them grow.
The site includes the York Science and Enterprise Centre, which was part funded by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF).
The campus spokesman, Dr Patrick Bonnett, said that the labs and research amenities on the site would operate on a ‘plug and play’ principle, in that they could be changed to meet the needs of all the different companies as they develop.
He told the Yorkshire Post that it would become a “multi-occupancy site populated by a range of knowledge rich science and innovation based organisations”.
“Businesses are focused on the areas of food, environment and applied life sciences with the common theme being ‘translational’ research,” Dr Bonnett explained. “They are working across scientific disciplines to deliver practical applications that help people and society.”
As well as the labs and offices the site also offers a 250-seat conference hall, along with meeting rooms and a video conferencing facility.

Inflation means 50 per cent tax rate payers still struggling
High inflation levels have meant that 50 per cent tax rate payers are still struggling to see any real return on their savings.According to research conducted by Moneysupermarket.com, the top rate tax payers need to find a saving return of at least seven per cent if they want to get any real benefit from putting their money away. This is problematic given the fact that there are no accounts on the market at the moment offering this level of return.Inflation stood at 3.5 per cent last month, after rising for the first time in six months. While this could hold good news for the economy, it is also increasing the pressure on households struggling to make ends meet.Kevin Mountford, head of banking at the price comparison site, commented: “Only a handful of savings accounts currently beat inflation, and in most cases you have to tie up your funds in a fixed rate product to gain benefit.“Consumers need to make sure they are on the best deals possible to maximise any returns. The top paying savings accounts currently offer rates over six times that of base rate so by choosing these, you can reduce the impact inflation has on your pot.”

Medical sales provide Philips with first quarter turnaround
The medical sales division of Dutch electronics giant, Philips Electronics, has helped the company stage a strong economic turnaround in the first quarter of 2012.
The company made a loss of €160 million in the fourth quarter of 2011, but has reported that it made a first-quarter net profit of €249 million in 2012, after sales climbed to some €5.608 billion.
The company’s chief executive, Frans van Houten, said that Philips' healthcare products have significantly increased their market share, showing that the company is “beating the competition”, even in a tough economic environment. He warned, however, that cut backs in government spending on healthcare across Europe meant that they remained cautious for the rest of 2012.
“We remain cautious about the remainder of 2012 given the uncertainties in Europe, particularly in the healthcare and construction markets, and the slowing growth rate in the global economy,” he explained.
The healthcare division of Philips produces a wide range of medical equipment used in hospitals, surgeries and domestic settings throughout Europe, ranging from home oxygen kits to hospital scanners.
Mr van Houten said that further restructuring of the company would be taking place in 2012, with particular focus put on the company’s corporate culture – which many people within the company consider overly consensus-driven and cautious.

High taxes 'restricting recovery'
While the 50 per cent tax may be on its way out, other areas of UK taxes remain high and recent attention has been particularly focused on fuel costs. The SNP has renewed its calls for a fuel duty regulator to look at moderating the prices of petrol and diesel in the UK as figures from the European Commission reportedly show the UK's petrol taxes as the highest in Europe. This is unsurprising when petrol duty is 57.4 per cent and diesel 55.8 per cent of the price paid at the pumps.Angus MacNeil, transport spokesman at Westminster for the Scottish party, stated: "The Treasury's tax take on fuel is modern day highway robbery. It is a national scandal that, in an oil rich country like Scotland, we are paying the highest fuel taxes in Europe."He added: "Families and key sectors like the haulage and the transport industry are reeling from forecourt costs, and George Osborne must honour his pre-election pledge and introduce a fuel duty regulator."The regulator would mean that any additional VAT raised by the government on fuel price increases would be diverted and used to pay for a reduction in fuel duty. However, the government has said that it is unable to afford to reduce the costs of petrol and diesel at the pumps, leaving an already squeezed nation forced to cough up even more in taxes.

Hospital's logistics benefit from mobile admin system
Logistics and communications in Nottingham University Hospital have been revolutionised since the hospital adopted a system of tablet devices and mobile apps to handle allocations of duties and administrative work.
The hospital’s after-hours service, Hospital@Night, was the greatest beneficiary of the new system, which has seen nurses and doctors issued with Cisco Cius tablet devices which have been equipped with the specially devised NerveCentre app.
Patients’ details are entered onto a central PC system, which is accessible from the devices, and the Hospital@Night coordinator can the allocate tasks via the NerveCentre app. Junior doctors are allocated cases via this app and when they accept the assignment, the whole staff is able to see what the case is, who is doing it and when it is completed.
The director of ICT at Nottingham, Andre Fearn, said that the new system had brought an unprecedented level of efficiency and accountability to the hospital
“It was just lots of calling, paging and waiting [before],” he explained. “And assignments were logged on a dodgy Excel spreadsheet. The whole process was limited to one room, on one PC, and only one person could see it.”
He continued, “By using this app, so much clinical time has been put back into the organisation. We’ve got massive patient safety benefits but also it changes the way we work – there is more time to look after patients.”

Business group calls for competitive tax system
While the 50 per cent tax is on its way out, there are still calls to make the UK's tax system more competitive in order to attract more business to the country.John Cridland, director-general of the CBI, remarked in a speech at the CBI/Policy exchange business taxation debate that a competitive tax system is essential for economic growth. He explained that an important distinction needs to be drawn between transparent low-tax jurisdictions and secretive tax havens: “UK businesses need to be competitive on the world stage and are perfectly entitled to operate in low-tax jurisdictions for legitimate business purposes.”The director-general acknowledged the statements made by activists, such as the Occupy groups, that have called for businesses to pay their fair share of tax. But Mr Cridland noted that the idea of what is 'fair' lies “in the eye of the beholder” and observed that in his opinion, the “large majority of business pays the right amount of tax, and that for the small minority which does not, times are getting tougher, not easier - and rightly so”.In scrapping the 50 per cent tax rate the Chancellor has gone someway to improving the attractiveness of the UK as a business and investment destination. But there are still a range of issues to be tackled, including the business tax rate and the number of businesses and individuals attempting to dodge taxes.
