Colleges united in embrace of social media

Social media is starting to look like a guaranteed way of reaching out to students, as just about every college has embraced the technology.According to the 2007-08 report from the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth's Center for Marketing Research, just 60 per cent of colleges studied had an official social media presence.By 2009, this had risen to 85 per cent but the 2010-11 school year saw the figure hit 100 per cent, with every college being monitored launching an official presence. When it comes to choosing a site, Facebook remains in the lead with 98 per cent of colleges and universities reporting having a Facebook page. This is up from 87 percent last year, and sees the company outrank its rival Twitter, which was in use by 84 percent of those establishments surveyed.Blogging and podcasts were also found to have increased in number, while admissions professionals are looking at LinkedIn and Foursquare and YouTube are also starting to get a look in.The results suggest that universities and colleges have realized and acknowledged the popularity of social media with students and are increasingly using it to connect and communicate with them.
