Colleges are being encouraged to consider the interests of all of their students, particularly the LGBT community.Elmhurst College, a small, liberal arts school in Chicago, has begun to ask students about their sexual orientation on the application forms. Gary Rold, admissions dean at the establishment, told the AP that the move could make the college “more proactive” in attracting gay and lesbian students.Other colleges have suggested that analyzing their student populous in this way is not necessary, but Shane Windmeyer, executive director of the national advocacy group Campus Pride, told the news agency that colleges have “a responsibility to take care of students they admit so all can succeed academically”. He added that a lot of LGBT youth get to campuses and find that they are “largely invisible”. Meanwhile, students themselves observed the situation as a diversity issue, akin to race and religion. While Elmhurst has received some complaints from conservative groups, it appears that the majority of people are in favor of catering to the needs of students of all sexualities.
