Prospective college students can now rule out colleges they can’t afford before applying for courses there, through a new net calculator ruling.Colleges across the US are now required to offer net calculator tools to allow students to try to work out how much a college course will really cost at each university they are considering. The quality of the calculations will somewhat depend on how much accurate information the student and their families can submit, but the calculators are expected to minimize the chances of students getting a nasty surprise after they are accepted onto a course. The calculators will include information such as the price of fees and housing at a particular institution and will also take into account an individuals’ access to federal loans and other financial aid.Laura Martin, the dean of admissions at Agnes Scott College in Atlanta, told the Atlanta Journal Constitution, “Students and families really need to consider if a college is in their budget and it’s in their best interest to establish costs up front.”Ms Martin went on to say that she hopes some students will be pleasantly surprised with the amount of financial help they can get to attend colleges which they may have presumed would be well out of their league financially.
