The deadline for submitting online tax returns has prompted a rush of users to the HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC) website. It appears that the site has been unable to cope with the influx, prompting a few glitches in the payment process. While 50 per cent tax payers and others were still able to make their payments, the error meant that the HMRC website would not reflect that they had done so. Sky News reported that this meant many people were still seeing messages suggesting that they owed thousands of pounds for the tax year 2010-11 when they had already paid.A spokesman for HMRC told the news agency: “Due to high demand today, unfortunately some customers might face a slight delay to their 'view account' page updating. But this should rectify itself once demand subsides, and does not impact anybody's ability to file.”More than 400,000 online submissions were filed yesterday (31 January) as people rushed to avoid the penalty charges that come from filing late. However, strike action Public and Commercial Services union members has forced HMRC to push the deadline for filing self-assessment returns back to this Thursday.
