A Cardiff and Bristol-based architects’ practice has won a high profile competition to design a temporary pavilion for the annual Welsh festival of culture, known as National Eisteddfod.
A total of 31 entries were submitted to the contest and the winner was Coombs & Jones - whose idea is extremely environmentally friendly - focusing on sustainable timber as the main building material.
Local Welsh timbers are used in the design and the growing of these timbers helps to increase carbon sequestration in the country. The design company has even taken into account what will happen to the pavilion after the festival, when it can be collapsed and stored, with frames and wood panels all cut to a uniform size to fit into a 3x3x2.6 metre storage container for future use.
Other green credentials include the collection of rain water on the structure’s roof and its natural ventilation properties. Dan Birman, of Design Circle, which backed the contest to design the £20,000 structure, said, “It was a very close call for the panel members, whose experience stretched across the breadth of the construction field, and a final show of hands showed how narrow the margin of winning was for Coombs & Jones.”
