The current London 2012 Olympics are proving a great success with sport fans across the world, but are they as green as they claim to be? We think the answer is ‘yes’.
The first green credential we would like to point out is the sustainable timber surfaces used for the cycling velodrome. The VeloPark can seat up to 12,000 people and is constructed using mainly timber. All the timber on the track and elsewhere in the building comes from certified sustainable sources. The VeloPark also boasts rainwater harvesting capabilities that will cut its consumption of water from the mains by 75 per cent.
The Olympics Stadium itself was also built using green technologies. Less than half the amount of steel usually used in a 80,000-seater stadium was used and a third of the site was made from recycled materials.
Another of the Games’ green credentials involves its measures to ensure it won’t need to use landfill sites too much during or after the event. More than 90 per cent of the waste from any demolition projects after the Games will be reused or recycled and the same percentage of construction waste will be or has been diverted away from landfill.
Here at Norbord we pride ourselves on our green credentials and help developers to make environmentally friendly construction decisions by providing them with wood panel products made from up to 80 per cent post-consumer waste recycled materials and FSC certified sources.
