College students are still Facebook’s ‘power users’ according to Facebook’s chief technology officer, Bret Taylor.Taylor was speaking in an interview with John Battelle, who asked him about privacy settings and why Facebook and Google have had an ongoing battle about information sharing. Google cut off Facebook users’ ability to port Gmail information into Facebook due to the fact that it had refused to allow Facebook information to be transferred into Google services. When quizzed about the disagreements with Google, Mr Taylor said that people have very different ‘privacy expectations’ with different services. He said that Facebook users don’t mind some information being shared with friends but would expect their contact information on Gmail to be private. When talking about students, he said that they are still the core users of the service, years after the social network was launched on Harvard’s campus. He explained that the student body helps to spread the word about Facebook: "The reason your mom is on Facebook is because you're on Facebook."He also said that college students tend to be extremely savvy about protecting their privacy on Facebook, adding, "If you talk to a college student, they know exactly what their parents can see and can't see, exactly what their ex-boyfriend or ex-girlfriend can and can't see."
