Norbord MDF used in Stirling pop-up shop initiative
A new project in the Scottish town of Stirling is intending to help protect the country’s high streets by finding new, creative solutions via a ‘pop-up shop,' with Norbord's products playing a vital part.
The former Body Shop store on Murray Place has been opened as the temporary shop for creative projects through an initiative launched by Made In Stirling.
The project has attracted £5,000 in funding from Stirling Council and it is hoped that it will help to fill empty units while providing space for creative people to sell their products to Stirling’s shoppers.
The store in Murray Place includes 12 portable display units that can be rented for £5 per day, then commission is also paid on sales made. A local joiner, Steven Walker, built the portable shelving units, which were made using Norbord’s MDF wood panels. The facility is being managed by Icecream Architecture, which also designed the shelving units.
Mr Walker, who is also a local art student and is renting some of the retail space, explained, “I thought it was good for Stirling to have something like this to promote unrecognised artists.
“There is a really good range of work on display and I have enjoyed finding out about techniques that other artists use. The shop is also enabling me to find out what sells well and conduct market research.”

Wood DNA testing proving popular with retailers
A company based in Singapore is hoping to further expand the use of its wood DNA testing equipment, which can accurately help to identify timber that has been illegally logged.
The timber testing technology from DoubleHelix Tracking Technologies is already being used by a number of UK retailers, such as DIY giant B&Q and Marks & Spencer. The technology is in demand as it is the only accurate wood DNA testing system available in the world and the question of whether wood is sustainably sourced has become increasingly important.
The firm is now hoping to up sales even further by developing a smaller, desk-top system, which it is currently testing at its laboratories in southern Australia.
Jamie Lawrence, who is the sustainable forestry industry adviser to B&Q parent firm, Kingfisher, said that carrying out accurate wood forensics is now vital for many retailers: “Any retailer worth their salt should not just be thinking about risk, brand protection or even legality. They should be thinking this is a damn good idea.”
Norbord’s wood panel products, including Sterling OSB, is sourced from sustainably grown forests. For more information on the green credentials and uses for Sterling OSB, visit the product page.

Artists use MDF and chipboard in installations
Although MDF and chipboard are usually used for more practical applications, artists exhibiting in Nottingham’s Surface Gallery, are using these wood panel materials as a basis to create their innovative installations.
The exhibition includes ‘lo-fi objects made of paper, MDF, felt, plaster or wool,’ according to an article in the Nottingham Post. Several of the artists exhibiting their work at the gallery use wood panel materials to create sculptures and installations, as they are light-weight, sustainable and easy to work with. Matthew Smith, for example, has created his chipboard boulders as part of his Erratic Groupings sculpture. The sculpture is intended to reflect how rocks in video games look when players get too close.
Suzi Charlton, whose ‘Planks (Brown) and Plank (Latex)' piece explained the thinking behind her abstract work, and behind some of the other works at the exhibition. She explained that they are about "deconstructing preconceptions of what a painting 'is'”.

NHS called on to provide mobile devices if nurses need them
Hospital equipment sales opportunities could stem from a recent warning issued to nurses by the Royal College of Nursing (RCN) that they should avoid the temptation to use their own mobile phones at work.
The RCN has published new guidance on the matter after a number of members raised concerns about the issue at the RCN’s annual congress this year. The professional body has called on NHS organisations to supply equipment where staff routinely needed to use mobile devices.
A 2010 survey of clinicians found that 80 per cent of nurses and midwives who carried mobile phone admitted to having used their own phones for work purposes. The author of the guidelines, RCN e-health advisor, Alison Wallis, said that nurse should not “bear the brunt of costs” of work-related phone usage.
“We are against the regular use of mobile phones for work purposes but we accept there are times when they may have to be used in an emergency, for example,” she said. “There is a concern that pressure would be put on nurses to use their own phone, although we aren’t saying that may be a conscious decision by employers. If they need to regularly use their phones the employer should provide them.”
The guidance also advised nurses to be aware of potential risks of using apps on smartphones to aid them with clinical decisions. Wallis warned, “Nurses are taking the responsibility on themselves using these apps. If they are downloading them and using them, they could be basing clinical decisions on unreliable information.”

Physio plans major expansion of chain of clinics
A high-profile sports physiotherapist has announced major expansion plans for his chain of clinic, which will all require top-of-the-range therapy and medical equipment.
David Roberts – who has included sports stars such as Andrew Flintoff and Lawrence Dallaglio as clients – is planning to add another six clinics to his current portfolio of six practices in Bolton, Middleton, Oldham, Old Trafford, Stockport and Sale.
He told the Manchester Evening News that his immediate plan is to open a seventh surgery within the North West, and then look further afield for his next ventures.
“We consistently deliver healthy profits which we invest into staff training, equipment and property,” he told the paper, stating that everyone in the company was excited about the future.
“Over the past couple of years, we’ve diversified beyond physio and now offer massage, Pilates, personal training and counselling. We’ve also invested in a mobile physio service.”
Other avenues that he is looking to expand into include providing medical support teams for sporting events around the globe and forging into the occupational health market. As well as leading sports stars, Roberts has also treated entertainers including WWE wrestlers and Take That star, Jason Orange.

Usain Bolt slams UK tax laws
Olympic champion Usain Bolt has vowed not to run again in the UK until income tax rules are changed. The Jamaican runner objects to UK tax rules which mean that he is taxed at the higher 50 per cent rate on sponsorship and endorsement income as well as appearance fees when he is in the UK.The 25-year-old is said to earn as much as £12.7 million per year. Before the Olympics this summer, he had not raced in the UK for three years. Speaking after winning the 100-metre relay recently, he said, “As soon as the law changes I'll be here all the time. I love being here, I have so many Jamaican fans here and it's wonderful."Mike Fleming, Tax Director at Straughans Chartered Accountants, said Bolt’s comments are significant. He said, “Usain Bolt’s announcement has thrown a spanner in the works which could threaten to derail our chances of attracting international sports stars to UK events.”He added, “Far from writing the UK’s name in lights as the ultimate host nation, Bolt’s parting shot could result in a much less appealing legacy. Unless tax legislation changes, other sporting superstars may decide to follow Bolt’s example and the UK may be unable to host sporting events of this calibre in future.”

Company developing pioneering wood DNA testing technology
A Singapore-based company is planning to grow its global sales base for its wood DNA testing equipment, which helps identify and track illegally forested wood.
The company, DoubleHelix Tracking Technologies, is so far the first company in the world to have developed and successfully commercialised the wood testing technology. The equipment has already been picked up by a number of key international retailers – including Marks & Spencer and the parent company of B&Q, Kingfisher – and has been hailed by many as a turning point in the fight against illegal logging.
The company has been working on miniaturising the technology, with desktop-sized prototypes of it already on trial. DoubleHelix’s chief scientific officer, Andrew Lowe – who works from a laboratory in the University of Adelaide in South Australia – said that they currently have 14 clients directly using their services, but hope to grow that through the desktop versions.
Jamie Lawrence, the sustainable forest and timber adviser for Kingfisher, said better wood forensics is crucial for the whole timber industry. He explained, “Any retailer worth their salt should not just be thinking about risk, brand protection or even legality. They should be thinking this is a damn good idea.”

Businesses warned to keep HMRC in the loop following steep fine
Small businesses are being warned to keep HMRC informed about any changes to their business, after one firm was reportedly fined £10,000 for not informing HMRC that its business name had changed. The Forum of Private Businesses notes that the company in question, which wants to remain anonymous, had a previously exemplary record with HMRC.The firm was originally fined £30,000 under VAT notification liabilities contained in the Finance Act 1985 and later the VAT Act 1994. This was after it added Ltd to its business name, following switching from a partnership to a limited company without informing HMRC.With intervention from an accountant, the business has had its fine reduced to £10,000 and work is ongoing to get the fine down further.Andrew Needham, tax adviser to the Forum of Private Businesses, said, “I am concerned that this is a change in HMRC's long-standing policy of waiving its technical ability to impose this penalty fine in such circumstances. If this is carried through and sets a precedent it could result in huge fines being imposed on small businesses which, in reality, have done very little wrong.”He added, "It is important that all small businesses are aware they could face steep fines unless HMRC is kept fully updated – but this heavy-handed approach is the very opposite of the support that is desperately needed at this difficult time and HMRC risks further alienating firms hit by its disproportionate, targeted business records checks regime and widely-reported poor levels of service."

FSC to begin scientifically testing timber and paper
The Forestry Stewardship Council (FSC) has stated that scientific testing will help to further legitimise its accreditation.
The FSC, which certifies that wood is from sustainable sources, is to begin testing timber to assure that it is from legitimate sources before being awarded accreditation under the FSC's mark.
The organisation already has several quality assurance measures in place, but it is to begin wood and paper scientific testing to enhance this process by the end of the year.
The testing is particularly necessary when testing products that are purchased by the FSC from sources in both Europe and North America. The FSC explained, “Early results from testing paper and panel products has shown that testing can provide strong supporting evidence around claims being made on FSC products.”
“FSC is confident that by using the latest wood and fibre science it can improve quality assurance at an affordable cost,” it added.
The science testing is part of an ongoing process by the FSC to research how other scientific methods can be used to further safeguard the legitimacy of the FSC quality assurance mark.

Hospice granted funding to purchase syringe drivers
A hospice in south-east London has been given more than £6,000 to purchase crucial medical equipment that will allow patients greater control over pain management.
The Greenwich & Bexley Community Hospice received the funding from the Axis Foundation, a grant-giving trust from Axis Europe, and will spend it on buying new model syringe drivers. The drivers are small battery-powered pumps that can be carried by the patients, allowing for their medicines to be released slowly, under their skin, to allow for continued pain relief.
The hospice was given a total of £6,287, allowing them to buy six drivers, which the director of care services at the hospice, Penny Jones, said will make a huge difference to their residents.
“We need syringe driver pumps as they enable us to ensure patients receive pain relief and other symptom control medication for example, to help relieve sickness when people are unable to take tablets or other medicines by mouth,” she explained. “These small pumps are invaluable in the care we provide for patients with complex symptoms.”
Peter Varney, the chairman of the Axis Foundation, said that it was their primary aim to support meaningful local causes such as the hospice. He stated, “Anyone who has called upon the support and care of Greenwich & Bexley Community Hospice and their staff will advocate what a worthy cause this is.”

Half a million tax return fines issued
HMRC has issued around 500,000 penalties to taxpayers who failed to submit a self-assessment tax return. Each penalty will be at least £1,200, made up of £900 in daily fines, as well as a late-filing fine of £300 or 5 per cent of the tax owed. Figures show that the number of penalties issued has fallen since last year. The latest fines are in addition to the £100 fines for missing the submission deadline – these were issued in February and March this year.HMRC has said that in some cases, it’s possible that the fine will be waived for those who can prove that there is a reasonable excuse for non-submission, such as a family illness.A HMRC spokesperson said, "We want the returns, not the penalties. This year, half a million more people have filed their return - which means we are issuing 44 per cent fewer penalties. But despite several reminders, nearly 6 per cent of people have not sent their 2010/11 tax returns to us and they will be getting a penalty.”They added, “We recognise that there will be some people within this group who do not need to be in self-assessment, and we will be happy to remove them from the system and cancel their penalty."
