Company merger could benefit medical sales jobs

Cheshire-based dental products supplier, DBG, has made a strategic buyout of a medical equipment testing calibration company, in a move that is likely to support development and sales growth.

DBG, which has its headquarters in Winsford, has successfully acquired TAG Medical for an undisclosed amount, according to the Manchester Evening News.

David Menton, who is managing partner at DBG’s mid-market investor Synova Capital, and a director of DBG, said that the move aligned the work of two mutually-beneficial operations and bodes very well for the future.

He explained, “This transaction will add the GP, hospital and pharmacy markets to DBG's already-established presence in the dental market, where it accounts for more than 70 per cent of practices as customers.”

DBG has a staff count of 80 and supplies equipment to more than 7,500 dental practices across the country. TAG Medical, which is based in Nottingham, carries out inspection, testing and calibration of medical equipment, working with more than 2,000 GP surgeries, 130 hospitals and 510 pharmacies throughout the UK.

The deal was enabled with a five-year loan from The Co-operative Bank with advice from Alasdair Mackinnon, of north west law firm DWF.

Simon Cowell backs tax cut

Music mogul Simon Cowell has spoken out saying that he backs a controversial tax cut for the wealthy. Chancellor George Osborne announced in last week’s Budget that he will cut the 50 per cent tax rate, which affects those earning over £150,000, to 45 per cent from April 2013. Some have criticised the move, saying it favours the rich when many are struggling on low or no wages at the moment. However, Cowell, who is said to be worth as much as £200 million, says that the move will encourage entrepreneurs to stay in the UK. Cowell is quoted by The People as saying, "I'm proud of being British and don't have a problem paying taxes. If you want some of the big entrepreneurs to stay in the country then you have to lower the tax rate a bit. Otherwise you will find them going out of the UK and working elsewhere." Serial entrepreneur Alan Sugar has also backed the top rate cut. He said a 50p rate has a psychological effect, even if the cut is not much less than this. He told the BBC a 50p rate makes people immediately think of half their income going on tax.

Chancellor cuts 50 per cent tax rate

The Chancellor George Osborne has cut the 50 per cent tax rate, lowering it to 45 per cent in yesterday's Budget. Mr Osborne confirmed that from April 2013 the rate will be reduced to 45 per cent, in a bid to encourage investment and business in the UK. The move was also driven by claims that the 50 per cent tax rate had resulted in large numbers of people engaging in tax avoidance plans. This included moving income into the tax year before the 50 per cent rate was brought in and transferring funds overseas in a bid to keep them from the tax man. By lowering the rate to 45 per cent, the chancellor hopes to change the behaviour of those on the top rate of tax in the UK. Yesterday's Budget also saw the introduction of a number of tighter regulations to prevent tax avoidance in other areas. A 15 per cent stamp duty rate on homes held through companies and a hike in stamp duty on homes worth over £2 million were among the extra taxes imposed on the wealthy. Meanwhile, those at the lower end of the income scale will benefit from an increase in the tax-free earnings threshold. This will be increased to £9,205 in a number of gradual increments.

Pension tax relief changes 'will feel like a rate rise'

Rumoured plans to limit pension tax relief in next month’s Budget will hit high earners hard, a tax expert has warned. Grant Thornton tax partner, Louise Evans, said that, while pension contributions of higher earners may help pay towards lifting everyone earning under £10,000 out of tax, there was also speculation the Government would limit pension tax relief to the basic rate of 20 per cent. "For high earners, this move will feel like a tax rise as when paying the top rate of tax you can claim relief of up to 50 per cent on your pension contributions,” she said. She also warned wealthy individuals may be reluctant to buy British due to rumoured plans for VAT of 25 per cent on luxury items. Families may also be feeling the pinch, with proposals to abolish child benefit for higher rate tax payers. Leighton Reed, tax director at professional advisers Broomfield and Alexander, said: "With the 40 per cent band now starting at £42,475, a family where both spouses earn around £40,000 each year and have a joint family income of £80,000, will not lose the child allowance, whereas one family earning £42,475 will lose theirs."

George Osborne 'determined to cut 50p tax rate'

George Osborne plans to scrap the 50p tax rate in next week’s Budget, according to reports. The controversial high-earner tax applies to those earning more than £150,000 per year and has been viewed as unfair in many fields. Sources say the Conservatives are concerned about measures seen to favour the rich, however. The Budget will be unveiled on April 6 but reported in-fighting between Conservatives and Lib Dems over its contents are threatening to undermine Britain’s Coalition government. David Cameron, Nick Clegg, the Chancellor and his Lib Dem deputy, Danny Alexander, failed to settle the row last week over how to deal with high-earners in the Budget. They are meeting today to discuss alternatives, such as a ‘tycoon tax’ or property taxes. Labour have said their opponents are clearly divided and called the Budget preparations "a shambles". Ed Miliband’s party have also dismissed plans to scrap the 50p tax rate as "completely out of touch". Simon Hughes said individual tax rates were not a "central aspect" of the Lib Dems' Budget plans. "We didn't say hanging on to 50p tax rates or having a top tax rate at anything else, we made it very clear that the wealthy have to pay more," he told BBC Radio 4's World at One programme.

Budget expected to damage confidence

People in the 50 per cent tax bracket and those at the lower end of the pay scale have expressed concern about the upcoming Budget. Chancellor George Osborne is due to deliver the Budget next week, but the majority of people are not expecting good news. Indeed, 66 per cent of Britons expect that they will feel less confidence about their finances after hearing the new Budget, with just four per cent expecting to feel more confident, according to a recent survey by uSwitch. A number of taxes are up for consideration, including the mansion tax on properties worth over £2 million, an increase in the income tax threshold and the rise in fuel duty set for later this year. uSwitch's research found that 69 per cent of Brits believe that their financial situation has deteriorated under the coalition, while the economic climate is also prompting people to change their habits with 18 per cent saving more, 28 per cent clearing debts and 12 per cent reorganising outstanding ones. Ann Robinson, director of consumer policy at the comparison site, commented: “Far from creating a sense of hope and optimism, consumers are feeling less confident about their own financial situation and job security as well as the country's finances ahead of next week's Budget announcement.”
